Designing on a Budget

How to Get the Farmhouse Look on a Budget – Part One!

Designing on a budget? Love the farmhouse look? Here is how to get the farmhouse look on a budget!

LABOR!

Give me any major design project, and I can almost guarantee you that the most expensive part of the budget will be on labor. If you are handy (or even think you might could be), then give a go at doing some things yourselves!  There are so many helpful resources out there nowadays to guide you on this journey of self discovery! If you are feeling adventurous and going to give it a go yourself, then here are a few helpful tips:

  1. If you know an expert (or even someone that has done it before), ASK them for advice. This is coming from someone you know and trust but who also knows you. They will give honest advice and talk about the level of difficulty for the task you are considering undertaking.
  2. Speak to your local retailers. Their employees often have tons of knowledge and are willing to share it with you and help ensure that you buy the right products for your project.
  3. Consult the Internet! My first recommendation is YouTube, especially if you are a visual learner. There are millions of videos here on just about every topic. You are almost guaranteed to find a video that will walk you through your project step by step while showing you how to do it. I would watch a few before starting your project to see if anyone does it a little differently (there is always more than one way to do something), and use the one you feel most comfortable doing yourself.
  4. Again with the Internet, research some how to articles.  These may not be as helpful as YouTube if you are a very visual learner, but many articles will post pictures to guide you along the way.  I like to consult HGTV and The DIY Network.
  5. Do not be afraid to ask for help from family and friends!

PAINT!

Paint is one of the cheapest ways that you can update any room in your home (or even the outside of your home).  It instantly freshens up a space and can have dramatic results.  I will give you a personal example of just how much impact a can of paint can make.

Here is a before picture of what my front door at my previous home looked like. I forgot to take a before picture of the actual front door so this is another door on my house that looked exactly the same.  The knobs are just on different sides! I hated the brown and how dark it made my home look.

I knew I needed something to brighten up my entry, but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a new front door. My house was already a fixer upper, and I was going over budget. This was one area where I couldn’t afford to break the bank. My solution? Paint! …and a little cleaning.

My entryway was instantly brighter, cleaner, more welcoming! I added a little piece of art to give it some extra character and a new set of knobs as well.  However, you could have just as easily used spray paint to give the old brass knobs an update and reuse them. Similarly, I could have used paint to add the letter “M,” painted welcome/hi/hello/bienvenue in the space to the right of the doorknob, or not added anything. The look is dramatic even without the “extras.”

Next to this door I had a set of french doors and several windows. It was all the same dark brown color. It got lost against the wood and was just too dark and dreary for me. Here is a picture of the change. It really is amazing what paint can do!

SHOP ONLINE!

I am alway buying online – everything from clothes to dog food to skin care products. Why you ask? Because more often than not, I can find the exact product I want cheaper online than I can in the store. If you are ok with a little delayed gratification, then online purchasing is very likely to save you money. Nowadays, with all the customer reviews available at the time of purchase, it makes potential buyers more comfortable with making a purchase.

I am a huge fan of Amazon (if you haven’t figured that out from my other posts!). I have the Amazon Prime account, which is a paid subscription, but I save more than the cost of the subscription year after year with free 2 day shipping and the discounts. If you do not have an Amazon Prime account, here is a link to more information about a free 30 day trial. In addition, there are so many Amazon users that almost every product has a decent amount of customer reviews for me to look at before making a purchase.

Shopping online also makes it super easy to search for a wide variety of farmhouse decor.  You can search for farmhouse tables or apron sinks or plaid blankets and get instant results to easily compare prices.

Now getting to the farmhouse look on a budget…

The three previously mentioned categories certainly can relate on how to get the farmhouse look on a budget, but they are more general categories for designing any style on a budget.  Let’s look at some specifics.

Want the look of shiplap without the price tag?

There is a new trend of faux shiplap sweeping the Internet. It is a painting technique designed to give you the look of shiplap without the cost. There are several videos about it, but here is one. See how that painting tip from earlier can translate into such dramatic changes!

Want to update that large, plain bathroom mirror without replacing it?

Here is an excellent idea to update your mirrors to give a beautiful, dramatic farmhouse look to your bathroom. My mom and I updated her mirrors using this methodology but not with these exact products. However, I will say that my mom bought this mirror at Hobby Lobby on sale and still paid more for it than the cost of the supplies to create a large mirror that looks just like it!

Do you love those rustic farmhouse kitchen tables?

If you love the look of a farmhouse table in your kitchen or dining room, then get ready to spend BIG bucks.  IF you are feeling adventurous, then here is a DIY project to help you get your desired look at a much cheaper cost.  This DIY project is slightly more difficult than the ones previously mentioned.

If you aren’t looking to build and stain your own table, then you will be wanting to save some money by searching for a table online.  See how all these previous tips are coming into play?!?!

One way to buy your dream farmhouse table online for cheaper is to mix & match pieces or buy the pieces separately.  For example, let’s say that we want to buy these two benches for a rustic farmhouse look. Two will cost you $230 plus taxes and shipping on Amazon. These have 4.5 stars and comments say easy to install and paint (there’s that word again) if you want.

Here is another bench option that will cost you about $276 with Amazon Prime, which includes free shipping!

Now all we have to do is find a table to go with whichever style bench we like.

I personally like mixing metals and woods together and really like this table, which as 4 stars. I could see this table paired with the second set of benches I listed…PAINTED of course!  This table is currently selling for $182.13 with free shipping, even thought it isn’t available on Amazon Prime!

I think this would give you a little more of a modern farmhouse design if that is what you are looking for, but we achieved this look for only $459.13 plus the cost of taxes and paint.  When your average farmhouse table set is selling for $1,000+, this can be a huge savings to your budget.

What about outside?

Let’s not forget about the outside of our homes! The absolute cheapest and easiest way to achieve a farmhouse look on the exterior of your home is with shutters! They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and they are very east to install (and uninstall if needed)! Keeping with our low budget theme, let’s shop online! Here are a few on my favorite online retailer, Amazon, with 4+ stars.

I hope that helps you to start thinking about how to make your design dreams come true even if you are on a limited budget! As always, please leave your comments or questions below.
